Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Alias: CD265; ODFR; OFE; osteoclast differentiation factor receptor; RANK; receptor activator of NF-KB; TNR11; TRANCER; tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 11A; tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, member 11a, NFKB activator
Mass (Da): 66030
Number AA: 616
UniProt ID: Q9Y6Q6
Locus ID: 8792
COSMIC ID: TNFRSF11A
Gene location on chromosome: 18q21.33
Cancer protein type: UNCLEAR
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: UNCLEAR
Number of cancer specimens: 20151
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.45
Normal role description: This protein member of the tumor-necrosis factor receptor superfamily but is known mainly by the name RANK and is involved in the TNFSF11/RANKL/TRANCE/OPGL complex in bone; essential for RANKL-mediated osteoclastogenesis. Defects in this gene have been implicated in bone mineral diseases but role in cancer remains unclear. Given its described activation of NF-kB signalling it is possible that TNFRSF6B can promote oncogensis through this pathway.
