Normal role description: IKBKE is a protein-serine/threonine kinase. Phosphorylates inhibitors of NF-kappa-B thus leading to the dissociation of the inhibitor/NF-kappa-B complex and ultimately the degradation of the inhibitor. May play a special role in the immune response. Loss of function therefore blunts the NF-kB response. Cells with DNA damage are unable to undergo apoptosis. Oncogenesis may therefore occur indirectly by inhibitting a downstream tumour suppresor (inhibitors of NF-kB).
