Normal role description: EIF4EBP1 is a translation repressor protein that affects inhibits protein synthesis by regulating eIF4E activity and preventing its assembly into the eIF4F complex. Its actions are mediated by hormones, growth factors and other stimuli that signal through the MAP kinase and mTORC1 pathways. It's been found that overexpression of EIF4EBP1 could partially reverse v-src-transformed cells, suggesting its role as a negative regulator of cell growth. However, it has also been reported that many advanced breast cancers overexpress EIF4EBP1 and may be promoting tumour cell growth and survival by activating a hypoxia-activated switch in pro-oncogenic gene translation.
