Normal role description: OLIG2 is a transcription factor required for motor neuron and oligodendrocyte differentiation and development. OLIG2 functions primarily as a transcriptional repressor and is hypothesized to repress genes which repress neuronal development. Overexpression of OLIG2 has been detected in oligodendroglial tumors which may obliterate regulation of repressors preventing tumour growth. The OLIG2 gene locus was also observed to participate in a translocation event with TCRA which has been implicated in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
