Normal role description: Histone methyltransferase that specifically methylates 'Lys-9' of histone H3. Has DNA-binding and transcription factor-binding activity. Activates heme-oxygenase-1 gene transcription and interacts with the transcription factor GATA-3, regulating the expression of several genes critical for T-cell function and development. Estradiol binding to estrogen receptor complex converts PRDM2 from a transcriptional repressor into a co-activator. Expression is downregulated in various human cancers. It is suggested to be a tumour suppressor and it could be a predictive marker for lung cancer susceptibility.
