Mass (Da): 90647
Number AA: 794
UniProt ID: P42229
Locus ID: 6776
COSMIC ID: STAT5A
Gene location on chromosome: 17q11.2
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 20524
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.46
Normal role description: Involved in signal transduction and transcriptional activation. Upon activation, STATs form homo- or heterodimers and translocate to the nucleus where they activate transcription. This process is triggered by ligands such as growth hormones, IL2, IL3, IL7 GM-CSF, erythropoietin and thrombopoietin. In myeloma and lymphoma with a TEL/JAK2 gene fusion, STAT is activated in a ligand independent manner. It was suggested that STAT has an antiapoptotic function in cells.
