Normal role description: AXL is a receptor-tyrosine kinase that is activated upon binding the growth factor GAS6. Some of its signal pathways include PI3K/AKT, RAS and ERK. It regulates cell survival and proliferation, preventing apoptosis, migration, cell adhesion, cell aggregation and homophillic binding. In cancer, it is found to be overexpressed and contribute to metastasis and invasion. Upregulation of this gene is observed in numerous cancers; in most cases expression negatively correlates with prognosis.
