Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: ATF1
Gene Name: ATF1
Protein Full Name: Cyclic AMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-1
Alias: Activating transcription factor 1; Cyclic-AMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-1; TCR-ATF1; TREB36; TREB36 protein
Mass (Da): 29233
Number AA: 271
UniProt ID: P18846
Locus ID: 466
COSMIC ID: ATF1
Gene location on chromosome: 12q13
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: GAIN
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 19535
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.02
Deregulated in translocations: t(12;22)(q13;q12): ATF1-EWSR1; t(12;16)(q13;p11.2): ATF1-FUS
Normal role description: ATF1 promotes cell proliferation and transformation. It binds to DNA sequences such as cAMP responsive element (CRE) or the Tax-responsive element (TRE) of HTLV-1 (Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1). ATF1 stimulates expression of CRE-reporter genes and suppresses expression of antioxidant detoxification genes. Phosphorylation of ATF1 by several kinases, i.a. PKA, enhances its transcriptional and transactivating activity.
