Normal role description: COL11A1 encodes one of te alpha chains of the trimeric type XI collagen which is involved in cell adhesion. COL11A1 is thought to play an important role in fibrillogenesis in connective tissue by controlling lateral growth of collagen II fibrils. COL11A1 has also been suggested to be involved in growth of metazoans as the spatial organization and normal differentiation of growth plate chondrocytes is dependent on type XI collagen in cartilage. Somatic mis-sense mutations have been observed in breast cancers however very little information into the pathology of COL11A1 dependent cancer development. Due to it's involvement in cell adhesion dysfunction of COL11A1 may contribute to increased metastisis of tumours.
