Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: GLI2
Gene Name: GLI2
Protein Full Name: Zinc finger protein GLI2
Alias: GLI-kruppel family member GLI2; Oncogene GLI2; Tax helper protein; Tax helper protein 2; Tax-responsive element-2 holding; Tax-responsive element-25-bp sequence binding protein; THP; THP2
Mass (Da): 167783
Number AA: 1586
UniProt ID: P10070
Locus ID: 2736
COSMIC ID: GLI2
Gene location on chromosome: 2q14
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: GAIN
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 20061
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 1.7
Normal role description: GLI2 acts as a transcription factor that positively regulates the transcription of proto-oncogenes: Myc, cylin D and cyclin E, via the Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) pathway. GLI2 is implicated as a oncogene in the formation of embryonal carcinomas.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: Acts as a transcriptional activator. May play a role during embryogenesis. Binds to the DNA sequence 5'-GAACCACCCA-3' which is part of the TRE-2S regulatory element that augments the Tax-dependent enhancer of human T-cell leukemia virus type 1. Implicated in the transduction of SHH signal.
