Normal role description: AURKA is a serine/threonine kinase and a key regulator of mitotic cell division. It is involved in regulating microtubule formation and the assembly of the mitotic spindle responsible for chromosome segragation during mitosis. AURKA activity is cell cycle dependent with the greatest activity occuring during mitosis. The overexpression of AURKA has been well documented in many malignant cancers including breast, ovarian, colon, prostate and neuroblastomas. Overexpression of AURKA appears to override checkpoints in cell cycle progression leading to increased cell division and proliferation.
